How do you talk to your children about sex?

Do you openly explain it to them since they are young and bring it up as matter of fact and normal or do you try to fast-forward love scenes and avoid the subject while they grow up and then have "the talk" with them?

I have a son that is 8 and a daughter that is 5. I do not watch love scenes in front of them at all. I want to keep them sheltered for as long as I can, although I seem to be failing miserably from some of the things my son comes home from school saying! I think it should be brought up around the time of puberty. Sure, they may know some if not all by then, but I will be more comfortable talking to my pre-teen son and daughter than when they're little.
